The Mystery Of Where To Find A Recessed Fixture Converter

Last year while shopping at Home Depot I asked a salesperson if there was an easy way to convert a recessed light to a junction box. I wanted to hang chandeliers where there were recessed lights in the Master Bath Redesign...without hiring an electrician. The answer was yes! He walked me over to the track lighting aisle and handed me the Recessed Fixture Converter kit, which cost just over ten dollars.

After Friday's post several people sent me emails asking where to find this kit. I had assumed it would be an easy item to find, so hadn't included a link in my post. But upon searching Home Depot's website, I couldn't locate the product. I thought that was odd. I then Googled and Froogled, but again came up empty. Determined to find a link, I decided to make a trip to Home Depot to solve the mystery. At the store I explained the situation to some helpful salespeople, who then proceeded to spent quite a bit of time searching their website for the product. Nothing!

So, if you want one of these kits it appears you'll have to go into the store, and know where to look. One reader emailed me that during her visit to Home Depot no one seemed to know anything about the product and she left the store without locating it.

To find the Recessed Fixture Converter you'll need to look in the track lighting section. Here it is tucked away with a lot of other similar looking boxes. The kit is made by Hampton Bay and Home Depot has the distribution rights, so apparently it won't be available in other stores.

If you can't get to a Home Depot store, I finally found this link for another brand's converter kit, though this one looks harder to install and costs nearly four times as much.

Are you wondering why I'd go to such lengths to find a simple $10.00 kit? Well, it is an amazing product (and no, I am not being paid to say so!) which easily and inexpensively allows beautiful lighting to be installed where a recessed light is located. I love adding wonderful light fixtures to a space, they are the jewelry of a room, adding that last special touch. In many newer homes it seems recessed lights have simply taken over, the ceilings look like Swiss cheese. It's divine when a simple solution to a design problem presents itself...and this is one of those great little solutions, in my opinion!

I was going to comment about the others available online - so much more expensive! You found a bargain and the lights look well. I wish I had a place to make this switch.

Janell - I've been researching products like this as I have three canned lights over my island and would like to convert them to pendants. I'm in Portland and would like to use some fixtures from Schoolhouse lighting. Do you think that the converter parts would cover most of my can hole. I believe it is a six inch can. One of the other products has this cover plate that I'm not terrible fond of. Also, which Home Depot did you go to? Wilsonville?

Thanks,

Hi Pamela,
If you are going to use pendants the cap will most likely not cover the hole left by a 6" can...can you get a larger cap than standard? If not you'll have to use a medallion, which could be quite small and simple and even painted to match the finish of the cap. Not ideal, but could work. I hope this helps!! Janell

This is a great tip. So, Im wondering if you can do the very opposite. Change a hanging light fixture to a track light or a recessed light.

I have a fan in my living room that I would much rather have track lighting.

Any thoughts? Any clues?

I found a similar "kit" at Lowes where the medallions are located. It was $30+. I didn't buy one, however, because every single package appeared to have been opened and returned.

I found a conversion kit online at Ballard Design but didn't care for the fixture that came with it. Plus, it was way too expensive! Thanks for the tip, I am headed to Home Depot right away!

Search the home depot web-site for the model number displayed in the upper right corner of the box. 383816. The price is up to about $11.00, but much better than the more expensive brand. NOTE: not for ceiling fans!
