When One Door Closes...Another Opens

This fabulous Comet Pendant was selected to hang in my future design studio. If you've been reading this blog for any time the Mystery Design Project posts have shown clues for this project. I can now share that I have been working for the past few months on securing a space in the developing City Center of the community I live in, Villebois. However, with the current economic environment and so many factors that would only bore you to read, this dream is on hold. For now. I can be patient when required, and I look forward to making this dream come to life in the not too distant future.

Interestingly, the day I found out I would not be moving forward with the design studio I secured my first small writing contract from a very popular resource for design inspiration! So, how bad can life be? Once this writing project is published I'll let you know where to find it. Working on this assignment has been a complete blast, and hey, if anyone else would like to hire me for similar work...give me a call!!

Of course all of this leads to the question, where to hang the Comet Pendant until I open the studio. Do I put it back in the box? Let it continue to hang from the fixture above the piano, getting confused looks from guests? Or do I find another home for it.

Taking a tour around my home, the only place it made sense to hang the fixture was in this small hall off the family room. I like it here for a few reasons. This is a completely bland and forgotten little corner in the house. Also, I have been wanting to bring more color and a bit of whimsy into the adjacent family room and kitchen, and this is a good start.

To hang this fixture I used a Recessed Fixture Converter. I love this product! It allows you to quickly and inexpensively hang a light fixture where a recessed light is located.

As the recessed light hole is larger than the caps on most hanging fixtures a ceiling medallion is also needed. This would not be an issue if you were to hang a ceiling mount fixture.

To bring color into the hallway I decided to paint the medallion turquoise, a color similar to the fabric covering the slipper chair in the family room. (If you think this is a bad idea, read on.)

Next the recessed fixture was removed and replaced with a junction box using the conversion kit.

The medallion was then taped into place so that it wouldn't get in the way while the light fixture was installed.

After the pendant was hung I quickly inserted one bulb and ran out to flip the breaker switch in the garage, wondering...does the light work?!

Yes! And can you believe these outrageous shadows?

Then the rest of the bulbs were inserted. This took nearly as long as hanging the fixture!

Just one problem, the turquoise medallion. It was not working for me, at all. Just too much going on, creating a distraction.

So I pulled out the ladder, again, and repainted the medallion with a color to match the ceiling.

Much much better.

I love it hanging here...a wonderful inspiration for other little updates to come.

I'm sorry to hear about the studio not working out right now, but excited (and not at all surprised) to hear about your writing contract! That's awesome!

That pendant is the perfect thing to give that little spot some personality. I agree with your decision to paint the medallion out so that nothing distracts your eye from the fabulous fixture. LOVE IT!

I'm sorry that the design studio didn't work out, for now. I'm also so excited to hear about your writing gig!

And the lighting fixture! It's amazing and absolutely perfect for that space. I agree, the white medallion is much better - it lets the light be the star of the show!

The light you picked is fabulous! I have been thinking about a small chandlier above the bathtub bur didn't want to go through the expense of converting the light. I had no idea it would be as simple as buying a converter kit. Thanks for sharing.

Oh...that light needs to stay right there...you'll have to find something else for your office or buy another one...because that just makes the hall exciting. I'm all about decorating up the hall just as much as the rest of the house. I love that light!

Janell you are a life-saver. I had heard about such a converter months ago & forgot what it's called to even google it. I have a home riddled with outdated spots and would love to try this. I wish I visited your blog more often, never enough hours, as it is always tremendous. You'll get that studio some day & then will be the perfect time. Coming to Portland next weekend. Save some nice weather for me! Have a lovely weekend x

That is seriously one of the best lights I've seen for a very long time. And thanks so much for the tip about the converter...I do hope they're available in Australia...I have just the spot! I'm sure with your skill and style the studio will be a reality sooner rather than later. All the best.

Okay, I've gotten a lot of inquires about where to find the Recessed Fixture Converter. In a quick search and I didn't find it online, but it is made by Hampton Bay, Transitional Collection. I buy mine at Home Depot for around $10. I will find a link to it somewhere, when I get a bit more time, and post about it. It truly is a wonderful tool to use in home improvement!!

Hi My Sweet Friend!!!! I am sorry your space is taking longer than expected. Isn't it always something? On the other hand I am OBSESSED, I mean head over heels OBSESSED with the home you found for the light. If I was there I would just stand there and stare. Can't wait to see what project awaits you!

I hope you're having a great evening!

Like others I'm looking forward to your finding a source for the converter kit. I can't find it either, at the store or online. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with electrical regulations...I mean, if we can do it ourselves it might not be "safe" i.e., we don't have to hire an electrician?

Bling, Bling, Shari! That little hallway may end up to be you favorite place in the house! I would think you'd get inspired just walking by. Don't lose hold of the dream for a studio. I moved out of my house 4 years ago, and I love the additional space, the cred it gives you as a designer, not to mention getting your home back. Hang in there...you'll do it soon especially with all the writing contracts you're going to get! You go girl!
