Painting A Compass Ceiling Medallion - Big Boy's Bedroom

At the risk of taking the Map & Explorer theme too far, painting a compass medallion above the ceiling fixture was the quickest and cheapest solution to a problem.

What problem? When I removed the original light fixture marks were left behind that the cap on the new fixture did not cover. I thought a quick touch up would be all that was required and I'd be on my way. But despite my using what I am virtually certain was a can of the original ceiling paint, a big shiny spot was the result. Oh brother. Realizing I'd never be able to match the paint and finish, which has been on the ceiling for over two years, I thought this project was a good idea.

So I Googled "map compass" and found this image. Good, I'm ready to go.

Using a large mixing bowl a circle was traced around the socket...this was the fastest method I could think of to use! Then I drew a second circle around the first and marked lines to indicate where N, E, S and W would be painted.

The smaller circle was painted Sherwin William's Macadamia, the wall color used in the room.

The second circle was painted Sherwin Williams Camelback, the color used to fill in the maps on the walls. Then using a small painters brush I began adding the details. I only had about an hour for this project and this worked to my benefit. I didn't have time to attempt perfection! The resulting rough lines fit the character of the room and the maps on the walls.

(And BTW, I am not a fan of the texture on these ceilings! Luckily I notice it more in these photos for the blog than in real life.)

I can't wait for Max to see it when he gets home from school! Incidentally, North was placed to reflect how the house sits, but afterwards I stepped back and saw a nice surprise. North on the compass is pointing towards Alaska and Canada, South towards Australia and New Zealand, East to Japan and West to the Americas. I have no idea how I got so lucky!

p.s. However, if I were to do this project again, (in case you'd like to try a similar project) I would instead place all the letters to radiate from the center rather than be oriented in one direction. This would allow the compass to read well from all the vantage points in the room.

This is so cute! I like how you're going with an overall scheme but keeping it sophisticated and not too "theme-y". I'm sure he loves it!

It is a great final touch - I am also glad to hear that the map and supporting countries supported your design. I always loved looking at a map and a compass when I was growing up. It really is a dream big boys bedroom.

Nice job!

Great solution to that issue, Janell! I know all about the paint not matching and you're sure it's the same paint you originally used. Learned that when we were touching up spots on our ceilings last year when we were going to sell.

This is such a great idea! I love how well it came out. You truly are fearless in your decorating! Your kids are lucky that you put in so much effort in designing their rooms. I find that it is the most fun room in the house to decorate. You can truly let go!

Enjoy all your hard work : )

i love it!!
i think it is my very favorite detail in the entire room.
(and that's saying a lot)
i have a thing for compasses--a compass was the logo for my husbands construction company, and i love that they have an old world quality about them.

What a fantastic idea !! You're like Michaelangelo, painting on the ceiling, I love it ! Now Max will always have fond memories of his ceiling compass. . . and perhaps a better sense of direction. :-)

A great solution! And I think it's OK to go with a theme in a kid's bedroom, especially when the colors are so sophisticated!

Janell, Janell, Janell... that. is. so. awesome! I really wish I knew how to get things done like you. You had only an hour to do this project? That's how long my "few minutes with my blogs and cereal" takes in the morning, LOL! Way to go, girl! And the design... exquisite. And what kismet for the compass to coordinate with the maps, which by the way, are my favorite thing in the room.

I love it too. I would think when you walk in the room that your eye would immediately be drawn upwards and I just love that! I've spent most of my life looking at the bottom half of the rooms I've lived in. It's nice to have the decor move upwards. It makes rooms feel bigger imo.

I am so in love with the color scheme! Michael Miller has a line called Citron that is gray, white, and yellow so I am just so in love with this. Especially the bedspreads. That is my favorite part.
