Oh, What To Wear?!

I will be attending a very special wedding in less than two weeks and I really want to find just the right outfit. I have nothing appropriate to wear hanging in my closet and I am finding it quite hard to make a decision on what to purchase.

Can you blame me? Ever since this event I have experienced great uncertainty when it comes to dressing up! But here is what has caught my eye...

Kate Spade's Jungle Dot Lucille Dress. Too adorable & too expensive!

Another darling Kate Spade number, the Summer Striped Jullian Dress. But besides pushing the budget, something strongly tells me someone at the wedding will be wearing this. I don't need to go there...again.

This ensemble from JCrew would be more my style, but are separates too casual, paired with a delicate little sweater? Tell me, please.

Oh, I am at a complete loss...it's a good thing I no longer work in fashion!!

I'm not a fashion gal, but LOVE the nude colors and styling of the J Crew pieces. To me, you will never go wrong with their pieces. This set is elegant and understated...perfect for you, I would imagine....and you could wear it many times over...

I'm always partial to JCrew, because you'll get a lot of wear out of the pieces. That said, if it's a special occasion, you could splurge on something you'll love. Maybe you'll finally get that nice photo of yourself in the special dress!

You know what's funny? When I glanced at the pictures I thought the last one looked totally you! I'd pair it with a nicer sweater.

Nicole Miller also has great little dresses that I've picked up for weddings in the past. (And the best part is -- bc I know you're slender -- they're ACTUALLY true to size.)

Oh my! I love the first Kate Spade dress...LOVE! And the J Crew is next in line. Now if its too casual depends on the time of the wedding and the setting. My wedding was at 12:00 noon and at an estate that had beautiful gardens so any of these would have worked. If its later like 4ish or 5 then you must cocktail it up;). Again I LOVE that kate spade dress;) can't wait to see what you choose!

The same thing happened to me once at a christening when I was wearing the same outfit as the mother...luckily I lived close by so ran home and got changed! I really love the third outfit...it's simple, elegant and can be dressed up with knock out jewellery or really special shoes.

It's a later afternoon wedding...and a Perfect Gray hit on the real issue:

I can't just go select something for THIS event, my mind is thinking about if I'd ever wear it again. My "get your value out of every purchase" mentality is creating havoc!

Anyone want to go shopping with me!?

ModCloth has some really adorable summer dresses.

This one's classy and cute! http://www.modcloth.com/store/ModCloth/Womens/Dresses/Temporary+Secretary+Dress+in+Summer

I like the detailing along the bottom of this one: http://www.modcloth.com/store/ModCloth/Womens/Dresses/Floral/Preservation+Society+Dress+in+Peony

Love the colour and grecian styling of this one: http://www.modcloth.com/store/ModCloth/Holiday+Gift+Guides+2009/ModCloth+Gift+Picks/Grecian+Green+Dress

I don't know if this one would be too heavy for winter, but you could channel your inner Joan Halloway of Mad Men in it! http://www.modcloth.com/store/ModCloth/Thankful+for+You+Sale/Day+4+Monday/Dress+Side+Story+in+Indigo

Adorable! http://www.modcloth.com/store/ModCloth/Womens/Lake+District+Dress

Okay, I'm done now, and I barely even made a crack in them! Go check their site out. You might find one you like.

I love #1 and #3 for a day wedding. But if the reception is at night, I think you might want to glam it up a bit. Not sure the level of formality or glitz but I always use the time of the reception as my guide.

So I just wrote the mother of the bride and got this immediate response: (BTW, I'm amused by the fact SHE doesn't have a dress yet and that she says Mory, the bride, will be wearing a bridal gown! I could have nearly predicted that! Ha!)

"NO STRESS! Consider this…its 10 days away, and I DON’T HAVE A DRESS YET! And I’M not stressed (although everybody seems a little stressed by my lack of dress!)

I think you will see everything. Mory is wearing a bridal gown (I guess that’s not helpful). I don’t know what people will wear, but it is an after 6:00 wedding/dinner/dance so I assume most people will dress up. What I would like is semi-formal (whatever that is) or dressy cocktail….in other words, on the dress side, but not “ball gown”. You will look GORGEOUS whatever you wear! Long is ok. Short is ok. Anything in between is ok. It would be lovely if not everyone is wearing black so don’t be afraid to do color (or colors)….anything you like we will LOVE!

Does that help?"

Yes, thank you! Janell

I love the j. crew outfit, however, you could also do a black pencil skirt with one of their silk ruffled blouses, a little cardigan and some blingly jewelry. As long as you're comfortable you'll look stunning! Plus, as my mom would say "You're not the bride this time honey, no one's looking at you", thanks mom! Have a great time! *Amy

Think the J crew ensemble would look great. What about a Pashmina/wrap ?
The Kate Spade style dress is screaming out for a hat!! Do you wear hats in the States at weddings. I love them but don't know if its a British thing .

Just had a second look at the J crew outfit. Is the model wearing pop socks (short nylons)??!! Thats hideous.
Wearing those with an outfit is a heinous crime.

Love the J Crew ensemble. Jazz it up with jewelry and metallic shoes and you'll be good to go!

That first dress is spectacular--and so incredibly simple to make!! Goodness, that's the kind of dress you don't even need a pattern for! With your skills, you could easily make that yourself in a day! Pick a fabric you love, make that dress, and you'll be guaranteed to have a one-of-a-kind dress!!

I vote for the Kate Spade! Beautiful. But of course as your father you'd look great in most anything. If its too expensive, sell it later, but how could a dress that beautiful be too expensive. Dad

Janell I LOVE the J. Crew outfit! You could def. wear that to a wedding and you SHOULD...for the following reasons:

1. You'll look fab in it, you've got the body to pull it off (from what I've seen in the pics you;ve posted)

2. You be an original in a sea of black dresses!

3. You can EASILY dress it up (more) with jewels and beautiful shoes.

4. You (and others) are right, you'll get more wear out of those clothes, for sure!

GO FOR IT!!!

Wear the separates. You'll be more comfortable, feel better and enjoy the night more. Remember to please yourself and you'll always look your best. Have fun!

Janell...do you ever shop Ann Taylor LOFT? I haven't checked lately but they often have some cute things. A little J Crew influence...just a little better priced.

ooh i love that last outfit. looks so fab. would look amazing on you!

Rebecca Timson said...

This sort of situation is one of the reasons why I got into fashion. I could never find what I wanted and anything I liked I couldn't justify the price. I had 3 major fashion shows last year and wore the same $10 dress that I made at each event. It was a bit of an experiment. NO-ONE noticed... So my advice to you is to either wear something you already have and sprouse it up with some cool new accessory pieces or go with your JCrew choice. But def dress it up with a gold belt and some statement jewellery.

Thanks for all your opinions! What a help. Thus far I've ordered the Jullian dress (which may not get here in time), looked at my closet (which is actually amazingly empty) and made a list of stores to hit this weekend. And if I only had time to sew something myself!! Ha...that is not going to happen. So, hopefully I'll find something and won't be shopping in Chicago right before the wedding. If this seems like a lot of bother, the girl getting married is very special to me...almost like a daughter. So, worth every bit of effort!! Janell

Love the last look, but I just saw an identical skirt to the one shown for 40% off at LOFT :)

Found you through Bryn Alexandra's blog! Love your home decor ideas!
