An Ikea Challenge

I am so happy with the items I found the other day at Ikea that I've decided to give myself a challenge for this room. What is it? Finish the room using only items from Ikea with the goal of creating a high end look. Sounds like to good challenge to me, what do you think?

The first task, assembling the desk. It took a total of one hour and twenty minutes to complete the job. It could have taken less time, but unfortunately I had to backtrack twice to turn around one board I had assembled backwards and another upside down. Grrrr...

The desk feels sturdy, fits the space between the beds perfectly and while I know it is going to get plenty of dings once Max starts using it, I'm okay with that. The wear will just add a bit of patina.

The drapery panels, with their yellow and gray stripes, look great with the pale golden wall color and chalkboard stripe. The pillows add another graphic punch.

The only choice from my Ikea shopping trip that didn't work were the green throws. The green was too bright against the more muted green chairs at the foot of the beds. I still think the room needs a touch of this color, just need to find the right shade and item.

What I do see is that the room is calling out for a splash of yellow. A pair of yellow pillows, a yellow patterned fabric to replace the red stripe on the lamp shades or perhaps a yellow ottoman to be placed under the desk.

So, I'm excited to get back to Ikea to find the remaining items for the room and see if I can make it all work. In the meantime, I think it might be time to complete painting various sections of the globe on the remaining walls. Regardless, I'll have additional progress to show you soon!

Looks super great and even better it doesn't look like an all Ikea room! I love those walls! Can't wait to see what you do next!

Janell you always amaze me! This room is going to be really nice. I like the fact that its for a 6 year old and does not include cartoon characters and all of the primary colors! And that its mostly 'his' ideas!

Looking great, Janell! That desk does fit in that spot so well! Love the drapes. Have fun shopping for the rest of your items ~ I think you can accomplish that challenge!

I love all the colors together. I think a splash of yellow would up the anty on his room. (Only b/c I am starting to fall in love with yellow) I love the curtains too. His room is looking quite posh!

i love how his room looks. it's come together beautifully. i love how you always manage to pull off sophistication and whimsy at the same time -- such a tricky pursuit, and you tackle it so well.

by the way, i've been meaning to email you to tell you that i saw a chalkboard car the other night! yes, an ENTIRE CAR covered in chalkboard paint. it was outside of an art gallery opening. thought of you! (in a good way!)

I love it! It looks so "grown up." :) I think yellow will be fun, or maybe orange.

Wow! It looks really great. I think yellow would be fabulous.

I am in the process of re-doing my son's room again. He hates his wall colour and so do I. When I suggested a light kahki colour he said, no, it will remind me of diarrhea! I like how you have included Max in the decision process, I need to listen to my son more. I had thought of painting a map mural too after seeing one at my local Benjamin Moore store but since we are renting and hoping to move, I will just control myself and re-paint the walls.

After seeing your room, I think I might paint a light charcoal grey on the walls. I think it would look great with the red accents in his room and his dark furniture. Hmmm.... the wheels are turning.

I didn't realize yesterday how small the desk is. It looks super cute!
Do you feel the panels block enough light? I'm guessing Portland may get long evenings in summer.

Wow, what a process for a little desk! The room definitely doesn't look like an Ikea room! It's coming along beautifully, great job. I bet the little guy's loving it!

what a sophisticated room for a young man! My mom never cared and I had the crappy, junky kid's room that most kids have. Needless to say, I am jealous of Max and I vow to give my future kids a nice room.

Wow I love it, even more than I love Ikea, which is a lot! :)

Janell, Max is so lucky to have you. What a creative Mom!!!

I love the room and everything you are doing with the walls. Amazing.

I just found some star constellation charts on E-bay that I will use for Prince William's room (2.5). (See my latest post). But now I am kind of lost. Maybe a chalk wall for him as well?

I also need to figure out a cost efficient way to put up window treaments that look good and also block out the light. Any suggestions?

Much fondness,

Mon

your wall paintings are to die for. I can't believe that you are doing all those wall paintings y

I LOVE this room! You are very creative and though my Swedish DNA is programmed to like IKEA you have managed to blend this so well.

The map / chalkboard combo is fab. I am taking notes.

Thanks for visiting my blog - I hope I will see you often.

My boys were always big bed jumpers, so I used a fabric cube for the table for them. Just watch those corners. I am an ER frequent flier.
I do love the grown-up feel.

Oh, good point pve! We don't jump on furniture in this house, but accidents happen! I've been to the ER just once with Max, a cut on the head. The ER nurse said we'd get to know each other well over the years...so far that hasn't happened, thankfully! Janell
