Home Office Shelving Update - Wife vs. Husband

I did promise on update on what changes my husband made to this wall of shelves, after he returned home from a trip to see them. This is what the shelves look liked after I hung them and placed a bunch of his stuff on them. Oh so pretty and well organized...Version 1) Wife.

And here is what the area looks like today after he added a few more items to the mix...Version 2) Husband.

He likes the addition of the shelves, but he's a guy who loves his piles of stuff. I strongly suspect they will only grow.

Hum...I guess we know who is the designer in the family. At least I'm giving him a nice space to create his clutter in.

However, until the room is completely done and turned over to him for good, I plan to keep the mess at bay!

It's a never ending battle in my house too. My husband likes piles too, but they stress me out!

You are a good wife to give him reign over this area. I have trouble with that! It's like mine can't see the clutter. I think I'll try an experiment and leave one of his socks in the middle of the living room floor. I swear it would stay there a year if I didn't pick it up :)

The end result is fantastic - Your version is definitely better. I am a pile creator also - some habits are hard to break.

Great Outcome!

I can totally relate to that, not the designer's part.

the hubby's habit of leaving his stuff not on the right place.

As well as keeping the mess at bay so, i dont have to scream and do it at the same time.:>

Like the wifes versus the husband just think of it the before and after :)

Have a good one Janell

Look at it this way, Janell ~ at least he has a dedicated room for his "stuff". Better than the kitchen counter or kitchen table!

I can SO relate to this! I call my husband a pilot. Because all he does is make piles of stuff. I keep thinking I should get him a uniform. :)

Haha! I think there should be a day when all design bloggers share their boyfriends' and husbands' "contributions" like this. You should see my cocktail table right now.

Men are funny. We women think we make nest but I think men literally do. The way they pile their belongings in one area. too funny. They are all alike. I guess they like the convenience of know where there prized posessions are. Too funny,Good luck!! Kathysue

well....I am the one with the piles! my husband is the "neat freak" ! so sad, but true!

with that said, I like a nice space, now looking at my closet office, its more of your husbands style!

Ugh, I feel for you. My husband is a consultant so he travels a lot. This means he comes home....leaves a stack of powerpoint decks and scraps of paper and notebooks in a pile before heading back out....I HATE it. Once I loaded up a bunch of banker boxes and asked him to take them to the office :) I am sure his assistant loved that!

Sad to say, I'm the {piler} in our home. I'd rather see a pile of stuff than a bunch of clutter laying around. And yes, it drives my hubby crazy. He'd rather stuff it all into a drawer, box or closet and forget about it:)

I'm a neat freak most of the time, but in my office? not so much. :-) I TRY, but I can relate to your husband on this one.

Frustrating, isn't it? My husband (and one of my daughters) is one of the "it has to be out on the table, counter, desk, bookshelf people, so I don't forget about it" ! Drives me crazy. I am not a neat freak, but, put it in a box or behind closed doors! It can be messy in it's own little space.

Too funny! I am the pile maker in my home, frustrates my hubs to no end!

I like your version better but love that you gave your DH his own space to be messy! :) The trick is now just not to walk by the space and resist the urge to "organize" LOL

Hah! I think our husbands have similar decorating styles (i.e., cluttered).

LindsB said...

haha, that looks like my boyfriends kind of design. But you are right, at least you are making the space nice for him and that its his own space to mess up when you are done. Such a nice wife!

My husband is the SAME way! I just shut the door to his office and pretend it doesn't exist. Doesn't matter if I try to "prettify" it, he stills piles it with "stuff" in no time!

Love the new shelves! I just put up some floating shelves in our Master Bedroom. Will be sharing pics on my blog soon! :)

Oh, I think you hit a chord with people here!
I recently parked a decent-looking box on my husband's desk and just transferred his whole pile into it. It made me feel a bit better and didn't seem to freak him out too much!

My husband's office looks as though it's not even part of the same house! I'm impressed yours is keeping it as neat as he is (not that I know him but just knowing how most men are!). Marija

Janell:

I actually got up the cajones to email Sally Steponkus and ask about the wallpaper! It's actually grasscloth and its from Phillip Jeffries and it comes in a ton of gorgeous colorways:

To say I'm obsessed is an understatement. Now I just need to figure out where to use it!

Hi Janell,

Great post, and "spot on" concerning our house as well. I made my hubby read your post and we both had a good laugh. This project did inspire me to redo my hubby's office, however he'd rather keep all is "stuff" in piles vs. hauling it all out to redo the room! Thanks as always for the inspiration and the smiles.
