Goodbye To The Plain Walls - Big Boy's Bedroom

On Max's list of requests for his room redesign was a chalkboard, the color black and his wish to get rid of the plain walls. What solution comes to your mind? What occurred to me was that I could address all these wishes with one item...chalkboard paint. So yes, hang in there with me, here comes another project using chalkboard paint.

First step, replenish my supply of Frog Tape...this stuff is amazing!

I decided to paint one wide stripe of chalkboard paint around the perimeter of the room, at just the right height for Max to draw on it. After measuring where to place the lines, I applied Frog Tape along the edges above and below the area to become the chalkboard.

Afterwards the stripe was painted with a tinted primer, all done by mid morning so I could get to some other work!

Then, with Max camped out in Isabella's room (his room was too stinky), I was able get the coat of chalkboard paint applied last night. Hopefully I'll find an hour today to cover the stripe with chalk. That is when you get to see how the final result is really going to look. I also have an idea of how to treat the walls above the chalkboard stripe, but more on that later.

In the meantime look at this fabric!! No, it is not going in this room...but while browsing for fabric ideas for Max's room I got distracted. I need to fast forward and find a use for this fabric asap. It is speaking to me on every level.

This fabric just showed up at Calico Corners and is named Surankari. I am biding on a chair I found on eBay tonight, should I win I know what fabric will be used in its makeover. Wish me luck!

I have a five year old son and this stripe would be awesome for him, if only I could convince my husband! I love this room redesign!

I love the idea of the stripe!

Do tell about this frog tape! The blue painter's tape I've been using is disappointing - there are always errors/leaks when I remove it.

That fabric is delicious. I hope you win the chair!

That chalkboard stripe is a great idea! A light bulb just went off in my head.... My boys LOVE any type of transportation. That would be a cool "street" that they could draw their cars and trucks on. All I would have to add is yellow and white paint for the lines in the road! WOOT WOOT thanks for the idea!!!

Oh, and that Suzani fabric is VERY nice! I was looking at it last night (on the website). That is the main reason why it takes me so long to finish a space. I get sidetracked by EVERYTHING!!!!

I absolutely LOVE your designs!

that fabric is gorgeous so i went to calico corners website to order a sample. It looks brown on their website but grey in your pics. What color is it?

Yes, I was very surprised by Calico's image...at first I thought they were showing another colorway. I refrained in my post from repeating a complaint I have of this company, but let me say it here: their online photos of their fabrics do the styles NO JUSTICE!!

The fabric is a blue grey, tan and golden yellow. You will love it!

My son would love the chalkboard walls, and then maybe I could giveaway the plastic easel which he loves, but it is not pretty at all! I recently used the frog tape for the first time, it is great, way better than the other painter's tapes

Dear Janell, what a clever solution to your son's design requests for his bedroom! The blackboard stripe is so much better than an entire black wall...and will lead to more creative use of it, I'm sure.

You and your observant friends are right about the color rendition of SURANKARI on the Calico Corners website. We're going to try to correct that as it is more of a gray/charcoal color, as your photos attest.

For those who are interested, all fabrics will be on sale through March 27 during Calico's Spring Sale. (Custom labor too!) Hope you snag those chairs so that we can see an AFTER photo one of these days!
Best,
Jan Jessup, Calico Corners
