Just When You Thought The Art Wall Was Done...

This framed chalkboard was the inspiration behind creating a chalkboard on the entire wall where I planned to hang a collection of art. Initially the plan was to hang the small chalkboard alongside the other frames. But then it occurred to me that this was kind of odd...hang a framed chalkboard on a chalkboard wall? Hum. Wouldn't that kind of defeat the whole purpose?

Then I got the idea to hang it on the adjacent wall. The slight irony of placing a framed chalkboard next to a chalkboard wall appealed to me. A tiny bit of the surreal. I recently watched the Thomas Crown Affair again, have you seen it? The scene with the endless number of men in bowler hats, inspired by the Magritte painting The Son Of Man, has apparently got me thinking about surrealism.

The small anniversary date frame was painted a golden yellow to bring a small pop of color to the art wall, and it is one of my favorite elements here. But it does get slightly lost. So I decided to refinished the frame of the chalkboard to be hung in a similar color.

Not only does this help the framed chalkboard make sense hanging here, but it also ends up highlighting the small frame.

So now the art wall is done. I think.

Ahh yes, Pierce Brosnan I mean The Thomas Crown Affair! One of my husbands favorite movies and my favorite men! Did you know that Pierce middle name is Brendan? Hmmm, I wonder where my youngest son got his name from!

Anyway...Back to the frame! I like this unexpected framed chalkboard hung on the wall. I LOVE the frame that it's in even more!

Perfect. Though now you get to shop for pretty bowls to hold all of the chalk! Fun! Marija

I absolutely love that wall and the new addition. I wish I was brave to paint a whole wall like that.

I really like how you used the adjacent wall - it works. Also any reference to 'The Thomas Crown Affair' wins points in my book... in this rare case the remake is better than the original.

I love how putting that frame on the adjacent wall seems to pull a piece of the chalkboard wall with it! What do you think about now putting one square of that adjacent wall's paint color in another empty frame on the chalkboard wall, to make it look like the pieces were "exchanged?" And a question...In the photos, I thought the gold frame looked like it matched the small gold frame already, before you refinished it; is the color that much different in person? Thanks, Janell. Love your blog!

To answer michiganhome's question:

Yes, I should post a before picture. I did hang the framed chalkboard first, before refinishing it and it didn't look right or achieve the goal of highlighting the smaller frame. I know it may not seem like it, but I try not to look for completely unnecessary work!!! :) Janell

The gold frame of the chalkboard really makes the gold frame on the anniversary date piece pop out more -- great job!

I love the way it juxtaposes the whole theme of your chalk/art wall. Stunning effect
I was enraptured by your wall shared it with my hubby (something I never do.) We are going to try something similar in our office. Wish me luck!

Very cool!
I have a solid smooth door in my garage that I painted with chalkboard paint and I love it. I'm considering some chalkboard graffiti for the top if I can find the right saying!
