A local client read my post yesterday, where I mention I'm still looking for just the right table. Afterwards she sent an email reminding me of her "guy". And who is this "guy"? A really talented craftsman who made a stunning sofa table that sits in her family room.
Subsequently I have had a conversation with "the guy", sent him images of my two front runners (if only they were the right size, color, quality, you get it) and am now awaiting his quote. Yes, I'll probably fall off my chair when I see it, but until then I can imagine that the table problem has been solved.
But let me back up for just a moment. Before I sent over specs for the quote I made certain I knew exactly what dimensions the table needed to be for this space. If I order custom it's not like I can return it if it doesn't fit!
To accomplish this I first cut out a 60" circle and placed it on top of a smaller table borrowed from another room. (See all those legs? This is why only a pedestal table will work here!) As I anticipated it was too big, but you never know until you try. I then cut it down to a 54" diameter. Perfect. However the typical 30" table height proved to be too high, both visually and to work with the seating. So I sat down, imagined working away at this fabulous table and determined 28.5" would be just right.
So now I wait. Yes, I suspect I'll be back here soon to tell you I simply can not afford custom. But again, a girl can dream...

Hey Janell, I've been reading your blog for several months now, and am learning so much! About the blog world, too -- I didn't know there was such a thing out there! Anyway, I wanted to ask you two things: in these pics, I see what looks like that circular seating you drew in your room plan, but I didn't see any posts about you getting that piece. Did you already have it? Secondly, have you given any more thought to that 54" ZGallerie table after you got feedback from people about the quality of furnishings from there? Thanks! - L in Michigan
Hi! Yes, I briefly showed the seating from the floorplan in a post talking about something else. Well thank you, I now have something to blog about tomorrow! I'll show details of the seating, which arrived a couple weeks ago.
Zgallerie. I love the look of the Sonoma 54" table that I showed in a post. It is one of the styles I sent to the "guy"...if the quote is too high I may go back to that option. I am, however, concerned about the quality. I am not basing this on anything except how I see some of the floor samples wear in the store, some pieces don't appear to hold up that well.
Thanks for your questions and reading my blog! Janell
Please keep us posted on how it turns out. I really really hope for you that the price is right!!
I just had my first custom slipcover made, and I hate it. :o( Thankfully the fabric was a thrift store score and the chair was hand-me-down, but the labor was still ridiculous...and I sew! *banging my head* Next time I'll do it myself....hope you can get the custom table of your dreams, and if not, I'll look forward to seeing what solution you come up with.
Thanks for popping over :o)
peace, cindy
It's good to check anyway, and who knows, maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised by the price.
Fantastic! I can't wait to see the finished product! Who is the craftsman? Does he ship? What kind of finish are you doing the table in?
Crossing my fingers that the quote comes back and its reasonable for you!
I wonder if you could get the ZGallerie table and alter it to work for you. Like maybe it would be less expensive to get this table, bring it to the guy (or even do it yourself) to get the actual pedestal part shaved down a bit so it meets the 28.5 height you are looking for.
Or I searched on cragislist and there are a few options out there. Maybe get one of them and then alter it to work in the room. One of them was only $100, so for that price it could be a fill in till you can get the perfect thing made.
I don’t know just a thought :)
Well you never know the price might be right! I didn't think that I could afford to have an interior designer create a design for my family room, but guess what I CAN!!! And I was so excited to hear from her this morning with all of her questions about the room and her PRICE that I did the "happy dance" all morning!
Thanks so much Janell I'll answer all of your questions about the space in a few!
Oops, I guess I did see that post, but forgot about it. Look forward to hearing more about it anyway! Thanks. - L in Michigan
I love this ~ what a plan. Great way to decide just what you need. You should check out my post on Peyton Home. They can do custom and it is reasonably priced!
Great idea! My guess is labor will be standard and everything else will depend on the type of wood you choose.
I'll keep my fingers crossed! So hoping you can get the custom table.
Likewise, fingers crossed!
I'm loving the way your "new" living room is coming together. I have a quick question for you. I love the Payton Drapes...can you share which color you chose for the room? Is it the "French Ivory"...? I am thinking about grabbing a pair before they're sold out. Can't wait to see your room when it's finished. :-)
