A couple weeks ago I linked the original post to Hooked On Houses, a post written about my fireplace transformation while working on my Kitchen & Family Room Redesign several months ago. Seeing this post again reminded me how much I LOVE the way my fireplace wall project turned out. So much so that I thought the project was worth another visit with this post.
Now watch the transformation. Here is the before.
And the scene after removing the fireplace mantel and tile surround.
One day while Max was at school I decided I could take on the job of removing the original mantel and tile. By the time he returned home all traces of these were gone, leaving some nice holes in the wall.
When he saw what I had done he cried out, "OH NO, OH NO, THAT'S BAD, THAT'S BAD!" Suddenly I saw what I had done through his four year old eyes. He knew if he ever attempted anything remotely close to what I had just done...well, he probably couldn't even wrap his mind around how much trouble he would be in!
Next, some repair work.
This is where I turned it over to the pros. New tile is installed and the surrounding cabinetry is prepped for paint.
Priming and Painting...
New flooring and the fabulous new mantel...
Decorating and it's done! Beyond delighted, I'd do it over again in a heartbeat...

That is great! It gives the whole room so much presence. Good work.
it's a beautiful room! I love everything about it - big windows, built in shelves, new mantle, couches and all the furnishings look perfect too.

Wow! That is just beautiful! I love built-ins flanking a fireplace.
Wow! What a change! That's just gorgeous!
I love what you did with it! It's beautiful. Got such a kick out of the "Oh, no, that's BAD!" reaction. Too funny.
I have your whole fireplace redo from beginning to end saved in my inspiration folder. When the time comes to buy a house I know i"m going to have to make a few changes here and there like you did and I just LOVE what you did with it. It looks a million times better and so pretty!!
I am with LindaB...A fireplace like this will be on my wish list! Great job!
Oh my Goodness! That can't be the same fireplace... or wall! LOVE it! Way to go!

What inspiration! Such a dramatic improvement. Our fireplace is next on our hit list. I can't wait.
Thanks for sharing.
Incredible, Janell! I love how you extended the fireplace out to the built-ins and then painted everything white. It's got a wonderfully substantial look that's both traditional and comfortable.
And your built-ins are EXACTLY what I'm looking for to fill the niches on either side of my fireplace.
Absolutely gorgeous. You have great taste!
Wow you should be so proud of that fireplace it is wonderful, so light and airy, I am also a fireplace fan..Your design work is beautiful...I am happy to be a follower, please come visit me and you can see my fireplace...
Wow, and what windows you have. Wow and wow again.
Happy SITS Saturday!!! Can't wait to read about all your redesigns. We bought a house two years ago that lets just say has a lot of potential. So were working on that one room at a time.
It's gorgeous! I had no idea when I read the earlier post that I'd get to see it so soon! You did a fantastic job. I love it! What a beautiful room.

okay so I'm late! I enjoyed this remodel and after it was complete....well let's just say I was like WOW! now if only I can figure out how mine should look!
Turned out fabulous - but so cute about the child response. You did everything short of write on the walls! The built in is excellent.
The redesign is absolutely gorgeous! I love it!
Love the new white paint too. Beautiful and just in time for the holidays!

So gorgeous! I'm in love with your floor lamps. Where are they from?
Love, love, love it! I so need a wall mounted flat screen! Painted bookshelves are so pretty and the mantle turned out great as well....getting the hubby on that project for me;)
Tamera@doubledelight
I have wanted a new mantle since we moved in years ago-I feel like it is not "mine". This is definitely "yours"! Wonderful planning and insight!

Jealousy just set in! That is gorgeous
you did that all yourself?!?!? UNBELIEVABLE! the white gives the room such a sophisticated look. and that is hilarious how your son reacted :)
I love the way it turned out with the new mantle and the white shelves on each side. Gorgeous!
This is GORGEOUS!! The paint color with your white shelves is perfect.
Just wonderful--but most of all I envy that wonderful window!!
What a stunning makeover! I guess you are thrilled. It's perfection.
Happy Met Monday...
XO,
Sheila :-)
What a fabulous transformation! It makes all the difference! I bet poor little Max thought you would be in "time out" for life :) Personally, I've always wanted to demo something myself :)
Absolutely gorgeous! Wow! You are very talented!!!
could you share the paint colors you used in this room? the wall color and the built-ins/fireplace as well...thanks so much, I love it!
I love this. I have a VERY ugly varrying sahdes of red brick fireplace I would love to demolish and replace. I cannot wait to show this to my hubby. Maybe it will inspire!! Thanks for sharing and I hope you are enjoying the space.
It looks fantastic! The whole room looks so welcoming.
Janell,
Would you mind posting where you found the couches and the rug??? Love everything you do! Thanks!
Yes, the sofas are from www.vangoghdesigns.com, a furniture line I sell to my clients. These are the Lisbon. The felted shag rug is from pottery barn, Ivory.
Good luck with any decorating project you are undertaking!! Janell
Hi-I love looking at all the rooms you have done. I have trouble with paint; can you please tell me what paint colors you have used in your family room and bedroom. I saw the office color and the other bedrooms but cannot find the others on the site. Thanks so much.
Hi Tracie,
The bedroom is painted SW Universal Khaki, which I've also used in the kitchen. The family room is a color from the same card, SW Quiver Tan.
Good luck selecting your colors, testing a couple hues you think are right, to see how they look in the space, is often key!
Janell
Love this room! I found your blog from a link at Favorite Paint Colors. It's gorgeous. If you don't mind, what color did you use for the built-ins? I'm moving into a new house and will be re-painting my built-ins and trim. I'm trying to get ideas and buy samples from there. Love the Auction chairs, too, by the way.
The color is Sherwin Williams Softer Tan. It reads much lighter in person (and online) than it does on the paint chip. A nice warm neutral, choose this color as all the millwork, doors and kitchen cabinets are painted this color.
All the best with your project! Janell
Excellently amazing and exciting too. Can you please mention me the source of your reference... I am happy that at least somebody gave this subject an attention.
