After reading a post about the search a client suggested I contact a craftsman she had used for a sofa table. I remembered how much I had admired this table so decided it might just be worth contacting her "guy".

Who is this "guy"? A very talented craftsman, named Philip Culbertson. Just look at his beautiful work, the sculptural sofa table shown above and the stunning table below. It is like a work of art.
We met to review the possible project last Friday and brainstormed about the design. I originally sent him images of the Somona and Kyoto tables, but if I am going to go through the effort of having a custom table made shouldn't we design the table rather than just copy one? A much more interesting project for both of us!Possible wood options are the maple and bamboo samples picture below, stained with General Finishes water based Espresso Stain. Gorgeous.
For inspiration I started looking at all types of furniture and came across this console table with the slate detail. It is a striking detail and I've attempted to bring the essence of this piece to the design of the table.
This is the initial rough sketch. I've sent it off to Philip to review and see what input he has, not only from an aesthetic point of view but a functional one. Let's hope there are no major road blocks and this project can move forward! You know I'll keep you posted...

Oh I can't wait to see this table! Question: Is bamboo soft meaning it may show wear faster? I heard someone say that about the flooring... Okay maybe I should let the pros do their job!!!
I'm so excited that you're able to go custom with this! It will be so much fun to have a table that you designed, and now you'll be able to get exactly what you want. Happy for you!

Brilliant idea and I can't wait to see how it turns out! I've had similar issues finding a suitable pedestal table for my breakfast nook for weeks now so I understand your frustration!
I can't wait to see it, what a great idea !
I love the idea you came up with- I hope everything works out and he can make exactly what you want.

I hope the price is reasonable. It would be beautiful! I have a friend who got a custom pedestal table from someone on ebay. I could try to find out who it was and the price, (although it was prob 5 yrs ago).
Hello Janell...
I'm just coming from your Sunday Favorites post...wanted to take a look around your blog! You have a delightful blog, my friend! I'm adding you to my list of blog follows...I'm looking forward to your upcoming posts and getting to know you! And...on that note, speaking of upcoming posts...I will be interested in seeing how your newly designed custom table turns out! I love your ideas!!! Stacking the wood for the table base is such a great idea and I love the "curvy" lines of it!!! Sending you my best wishes for success with your new table...can't wait to see the finished piece!!!
I left you a note on your Sunday Favorites post...I was just elated to have you join in with this fun Sunday meme! Thank you, my friend!
Warmest wishes,

I really like the idea of the stacked wood for the base. I see what you are working towards in the sketch. Can't wait to see how this one turns out!
Oh, very exciting, I'm so glad you have a chance to be creative as well as getting exactly what you want.
This is a wonderful posting. I noticed that you linked Phillip's name to his profile on CustomMade.com... I am curious if you (or other followers out there) use CustomMade.com to search for custom furniture and home furnishings...?
I am one of the owners of that website, and we are really trying to make it more attractive to people who "have always been passionate about design"
Nice... I have been looking for a 54" also! Scouring Craiglist has shown nothing! They usually too small! I don't want oval either. I might have to find a "guy" here in my neck of the woods! Can't wait to see what he makes!
Beautiful sketch, I can't wait to see the finished piece!
I've been looking for custom wood furniture near me. Does anyone know an easy way to learn about woodworking?
