Yes, It Is The Same Flooring In Both Photos!

Over the past couple of years I have enjoyed working on one of my friend's home, completing a variety of projects. One day while brainstorming about future design plans the idea of staining the oak floors was brought up...I literally jumped for joy at the prospect!

Oak floors stained a rich brown are my all time favorite flooring...traditional, classic and modern all at once. I also knew that if we went forward with this project it would have a tremendous impact on the overall look of the home.

Eventually a decision was made to go for it! Such a project is not for the faint of heart. There were periods during the process when everyone involved felt stress, along with a moment or two of panic regarding stain color and the finish. But...all is well that ends well.

Just look at the gorgeous result! Everytime I step into their front door I can't help but begin to wax poetic over the beauty of these floors...

Tell me, is there a project you have taken on that has caused your blood pressure to rise?

I'd love to know what stain color/brand/combo was used to darken the floors.

Hi Laurie,
We originally started with Dura Seal Spice Brown(237). The stain color was much too dark on the naturally darker boards so we mixed it with Dura Seal Neutral(210). The ratio ended up being two parts Spice Brown to one part Neutral.
Thanks for asking! Janell

You are right, it is hard to believe that it is the same floor! This makes such a great initial statement when you walk in the door. It really looks fantastic. I really like how the stain makes the wood look so rich.

Very nice!

Wow, love it! I like darker wood floors in general, and this just looks so good with the wall color. What is the wall color by the way? Now are you and the homeowner giving any thought to possibly staining the handrail on the bannister? :) It never ends, does it? Thanks for your answers. -L

Gorgeous! I have been following your blog for several months as your style is exactly the direction I am headed in. We live close by so you may be getting "hired" in the near future.

Just did an upstairs loft office and had many moments of anxiety, particularly when the wall came down only to find air ducts!-E

Can you touch base with me about the Its So Very Cottagey tour?
I was wondering if you can be ready for the Oct 9th Tour. I would need to get your items by Seot 30 so I can get everything ready for while I am out of town.

Love the dark floors - LOVE them. We have the lighter color similar to the before photo, and what I would give to have them darker. I wish you lived closer! Did you have to sand them down first?

Yes Chelsea, the floors were sanded prior to staining...does create a mess but who remembers afterwards!

I love the dark floors. I've been following your blog for a few months now since I found your post on painting your kitchen cabinets, and I used the same color you did to paint mine - the sherwin williams softer tan. I love your style, thanks so much for sharing all your designer ideas to all the DIY people who like to decorate our homes.

Wow!!! It is hard to believe they are the same floor. The end result was definitely worth all the hassel.

My daughter did hers over to a dark stain also. It does add a richness. We have left ours the warm golden color and I like both; but in our home we needed the lighter color because of the darkness of the house!

I needed to sew some 12.5' curtains for a project in McMinnville, OR. I googled for tips and found your blog and curtain tutorial. Many thanks for your help! You are part of my project! Check out the drapes in: www.thirdstreetflats.com in flat #4, The Retreat. Come to the open house on 5/15/10 if you can! Love your blog. Keep up the great work! Terri Childress

All wood kitchen cabinets cost significantly more because of their resilience and beauty. Solid wood designs are stronger, more durable; and if used, you will never have to replace your kitchen cabinets again.
