Living Room Redesign - Making A Steelmaster Cabinet Look Pretty

The project to beautify the Steelmaster cabinet is underway...
beginning with the priming and painting of its twenty drawers.
Luckily, no problems so far.

Progress aside, what I am really happy about today is this photo!
Is it a bright blue sky with a trace of clouds?
A view of skyscrapers taken from high above?

Or...just a bunch of drawers sitting on a tarp, in my backyard,
having just been painted.
Regardless, I like it...it's kind of poetic.

Next, having had success with the drawers I am feeling optimistic about tackling the cabinet.
Let's hope for continued good weather.
I never thought a workshop was something I'd put on a wish list.
Well, I'm starting to think otherwise.

Where do you work on your projects? Janell

Excited to see how your project turns out. My apartment is a shoebox and I don't really have the space to do projects...but I try and tape off my kitchen island to paint, etc. Great description of that photo!-carlee

I am still so jealous of your find- its the perfect storage for an office, or anywhere actually.

I wish I had a place to put stuff outside to be spraypainted, sadly living in an apartment does not give me much room.

Can't wait to see how great this is going to look! I love working outside as well...and a sunny day...doesn't get much better than that.

Fun photo of your drawers - it DOES look like they're floating in a lovely sky! What colour will you paint your cabinet?

Like you, I do work like this in the yard or front deck. I too wish I had a workshop! I know my husband would like one too. One day!

I did not realize that the photo was that of the drawers from the cabinet! that is a nice photo!

I usually work in my garage because I'm scared of the frogs and lizards that run around!!

I love that cabinet. I normally work on our garage. Starting tomorrow, I will tackle my credenza project. I can't wait to see your finished room.

That IS a cool photo. And a great idea for office stuff storage. Please don't tell my husband about this, though. He loves to buy organizing containers and things in attempt to organize. Yet, why is everything still all over the floor in his "office"? ;-) Have a nice day!

What kind of primer did you use? I have a metal cabinet that I need to paint. It's got some pretty rusty spots, so I know I need a good primer. I'd love any advice you have!!

Hi Vanessa,
I used Rust-Oleum's ULTRA COVER Primer...works great. The directions to do a few light coats vs. one heavy is certainly key.
Regarding the rust spots, I had a tiny bit of rust along the bottom edge of this cabinet. I lightly sanded with sandpaper and it helped these areas take the primer.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips, Janell! I will remember that. I am moving in a month, so it may be a while before I get to that project, but I know what to get when I do! LOVE how the cabinet turned out!

It looks like your project is well near completion. That's an ambitious undertaking. I hope your week is off to a good start. Have a great Blue Monday.

Oh, I love that photograph, too, Janell!

Let's see, where do I work on my projects??? All over the house. I usually don't spray paint because I'm allergic to some of the chemicals, but I paint outside in the yard on a piece of visquene or a paper dropcloth, whichever is handy. Sometimes, it's a large garbage bag torn open if it's a smaller piece. I've been known to paint inside, and I usually manage to keep the area around paint free... but of course, this is with a brush. I have to paint a bed, and I've been wondering how I could do that and not mess things up. This could be VERY tricky. ;-)

Happy Blue Monday...

XO,

Sheila :-)
